In bygone times pubs were about much more than socialising and drinking.
They were a major part of the social, economic and political fabric of the City - and there were a lot of them - 81 in 1811, 1 in 9 high street premises in 1902, and one for every 311 of us at the time of WW1.
This tour is less about the pubs and more about what happened in them.
As we make our way from the Bridge to Star Hill I will cast some light on the lives of those who lived, worked or visited this bygone “dirty and disagreeable” place “that smelt of red herrings and sailors”.
