Start you journey by taking a step back in time and discover the myriad heritage  attractions in Rochester.

Rochester CastleVisit Rochester Castle with it's great keep, the tallest in England and one of Kent's best kept secrets, the magnificent Rochester Cathedral where more than 1400 years of worship has taken place.

Charles Dickens moved to the area when he was five years old and spent the happiest years of his childhood around Chatham. He returned to the area for the last 13 years of his life, living at Gad's Hill Place, near Rochester.

Many of the buildings that can be seen on the High Street today, featured in his work.   These include the charity founded Six Poor Travellers House, a property that provided board and lodgings for poor travellers and Restoration House the home of Miss Havisham in Great Expectations. The life, times and work of the author can be discovered at the Guildhall Museum's Dickens Discovery Rooms where a short film on the author's conections with the area is shown continuously throughout the day.

From here, it’s the briefest of journeys to the exciting indoor visitor complex Dickens World at Chatham Maritime.  Dickens World takes visitors on a fascinating journey of Dickens’ lifetime as they step back in time to Victorian England and are immersed in the streets, sounds and smells of the 19th century.

The Historic Dockyard ChathamThe Historic Dockyard Chatham is a fasinating maritime heritage attraction.  Here visitors will discover how warships were built in 1758 in the Wooden Walls gallery. Climb aboard three historic warships and make your own piece of rope using traditional techniques with guides dressed in period costume at the Ropery. Don’t miss 3 Slip – The Big Store and the new cultural venue  in the wonderfully restored No. 1 Smithery, with world-class maritime models, art and objects from two national museums, plus temporary art and touring exhibitions.

The Royal Engineers Museum is Kent's only designated museum of national and international importance.  It provides a fascinating insight into the debt owed and the part played by the engineers over the centuries. There are several galleries for visitors to explore with collections of international importance that tell the explosive history of Britain, its empire and the rest of the world since the 1700s.  And the attraction not to be missed is Upnor Castle.  Set in the picturesque village of Upnor on the banks of the River Medway, the artillery fort was built to protect Queen Elizabeth 1's warships.  The castle fought bravely but ultimately failed when the Dutch sailed up the river in 1667 to capture the British fleet.  Visitors to the castle can relive the Dutch raid in an exciting audio-visual experience.

Medway has a wide variety of leisure attractions to suit all ages.  Ranging from a full-size ice rink at The Ice Bowl, a dry-ski slope with the longest toboggan run in the country at Chatham Ski and Snowboard Centre.  Test your skills at go-kart racing at Buckmore Park and if that's not enough, then there's just buckets of fun to be enjoyed at the ultimate adventure theme park Diggerland.

For the keen walker or those with a particular interest in getting close to nature, a visit to the rual parts of Medway is a must especially at Riverside and Capstone Farm country parks.
