Ramscombe Farm ReserveWhether you are looking for relaxation or recreation, the breathtaking landscapes and wildlife spectacle of the North Kent Marshes will be an essential part of any visit to Medway. These expansive marshes have been immortalised by the work of Charles Dickens, who lived in Higham by Rochester.

The Hoo Peninsula cycle route, or Heron Trail as it is also known, is a healthy way to explore this important part of the area.  The circular trail covers 18 miles (29km) and will take you to Cliffe Pools RSPB reserve, along with Northward Hill RSPB reserve, near High Halstow renowned for having the biggest Heronry in Britain.  If you are on foot, the Saxon Shore Way provides a more traditional way of seeing this rich landscape at its best.

The country parks at Riverside and Capstone Farm in Gillingham provide a safe haven for families and walkers wishing to get closer to nature.  With meadows, orchards and marshes to explore it is great place to relax and wander around.   Special events, workshops and activities are organised by the parks throughout the year.

As well as the country parks, there are several natural sites and nature reserves that can be found in Medway.  Ranscombe Farm Reserve occupies an area of 229 hectares immediately west of Strood and north of Cuxton village. With over 10km of public footpaths, it offers excellent opportunities to enjoy tranquil walks in an attractive rural landscape that is part of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Buckland Lake Reserve, near Cliffe has a sixty-acre lake with footpaths, cliff top walks, bird hides and views over the surrounding countryside.  Ideal for those looking for a fishing weekend experience.
