Themed Attractions

Medway offers such a wide variety of attractions that can be incorporated into a themed itinerary for an organised tour.  These themes are just a taster on what there is on offer in the area and could easily be included in tour itineraries with other attractions and destinations in and around Kent.

The 500th Anniversary of Henry VIII's accession to the throne was marked in 2009.  During the reign of Henry VIII, the dockyard at Chatham emerged and became an important naval base where many famous ships were built including Nelson's flagship HMS Victory.  Upnor Castle

It was some decades later that the Tudors returned their attention to Medway during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. One of the most popular and respected rulers, she ordered the construction of Upnor Castle.

The castle was built to defend her warships anchoring in the reaches of the dockyard and River Medway.  Open air theatre and special events take place at the castle during the summer months.  A glimpse of what life was like during this period of time in history can be seen at the The Tudors at Upnor event held annually at the castle.

On a military and maritime theme it's time to discover the vast number of warships that were built at The Historic Dockyard Chatham to defend the country, visit the tunnels and gun batteries at  Fort Amherst that were used to defend the dockyard against landward attacks, and see the important role played by engineers at the Royal Engineers Museum over the centuries.  The museum is one of Kent's only designated museum's of national importance.

Historic Rochester is the perfect place to explore the Romans, Normans or Victorian England connections.  One of the finest examples of Norman architecture in the country can be found at Rochester Castle and it would be difficult to miss the Roman walls as you wander around the ancient cathedral city of Rochester.
