Walking Tours

There are a variety of walking tours and trails in Medway just waiting to be explored.

Discover the area's history with a local guide on a circular walk around historic Rochester and see the buildings that featured in the work of Charles Dickens.  For the keen walker, Medway has a good selection of walking publications available.  The Dickens' Trail and In Dickens' Footsteps will take you in and around historic Rochester, while a series of circular walks provide recreational access to the countryside using the public rights of way network (leaflets available from Medway Visitor Information Centre).

Image of Footsteps in Time guidesThe places in and around Rochester that were an inspiration to the author can be explored on a 90-minute stroll with a costumed character from Footsteps in Time (these tours are only available for pre-booked groups).  Smart phone users can discover the delights that Dickensian Rochester has to offer by using the latest QR code technology and view clips of the Dickens' tour on their mobile.

Public guided walks in Rochester take place between Good Friday and the end of September.  Organised by the City of Rochester Society, they start from outside the Medway Visitor Information Centre at 2.15pm on Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays, festivals and public holidays.  The walks last about 90-minutes and are free of charge, although donations to the society funds are always welcome!

Tours can be arranged and adapted to suit interest, including Dickens, architecture or industrial heritage for pre-booked groups.  The society also offers a courier service for coach parties wishing to explore Dickensland - the area around Rochester made famous in Dickens' novels.

On the last Sunday of every month, beginning at 7.30 pm the Haunted Rochester Ghost Walk takes place. Come along and see the dark and eerie side of Rochester on a tour that lasts for nearly two hours and explores the darkest corners of this beautiful place.  Count Von Dickens will escort you around the haunted pubs, shops and old buildings of Dickens' favourite city.  Tours start from outside the Medway Little Theatre opposite the haunted railway station!

2012 will be the bicentenary of the birth of Britain's greatest novelist and storyteller.  To mark this special occasion, a year-long programme of events and activities to commemorate the birth of Charles Dickens will be taking place.
