For a full-on forties experience, it has to be WWII Weekend at Dover Castle. This year is the 100th anniversary of the WRENS, and this very weekend marks 77 years to the day since Operation Dynamo. Look out for something new to see in the tunnels launching this anniversary weekend.
Soak up the atmosphere in the military encampments and get up close to a full size replica Spitfire before stepping into the heart of action with the explosive battle. Meet the Land Girls, visit the 1940s beauty parlour for a victory roll hairdo, then revive that wartime spirit with a lovely brew from the original NAAFI wagon or go for something a little stronger in the ‘Resistance’ bar.
Step inside Mr Smith’s bombed out shop and discover the austerity of the war years from the Ministry of Food. Experience the German field hospital and don’t forget to keep your documents handy in case of inspection.
With a live band playing music from the 40s and plenty of hands-on activities for children including a brand new assault course – it’s one of English Heritage’s biggest events of the year and a real day to remember.
Book tickets in advance online, or alternatively let the train take the strain and travel by Southeastern for a 20% discount on the door and a free bus link between the station and the castle – just show your valid train tickets when you buy your event admission tickets on the day.
