Celebrate one of Medway's favourite sons.
Charles Dickens spent much of his childhood in Medway while his father worked at the Dockyards. Meaning that many of his novels and characters have been based on the places he visited and people he met whilst living in the area. Medway is proud of its history with this national legend, who created some of the world's most memorable fictional characters and remains generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period.
Every year we mark this connection with a wonderful celebration of his characters and writing - with costumed character parades, street entertainment, readings and lots of free activities - throughout Rochester High Street. This year the festival will carry the theme of Oliver Twist
Get involved with the spirit of the festival by dressing in Victorian costume and taking part in the parades and competitions too.
