Food & Drink
Savour the mouth-watering delights in Medway's places to eat and drink.
Historic Rochester offers an outstanding selection of English, Continental and Asian restaurants, plus numerous cafes, tearooms and atmospheric pubs. Outside dining is encouraged during the summer on the historic High Street's pedestrianised areas. When visiting the city's heritage attractions or after a shopping trip, do make the most of a visit by stopping for lunch, as many places to eat offer special lunctime menus.
Some of the buildings you can enjoy a meal and drink in Rochester, have featured in the works of Charles Dickens. These can be easily be identified by 'plaques' that can be found on the exterior of the building as you enter. If you would like to learn more on how the buildings were incorporated in the work of Dickens', call into the Medway Visitor Information Centre for a copy of the 'In Dickens' Footsteps' self-guided walking leaflet.
Take a gentle stroll down the historic High Street, you will see a vast range of places where you can to stop for a drink or two. Whatever takes your fancy, whether it's enjoying the hospitality of local publican, seeking a variety of beverages from a major chain brewery or you simply just love the taste of real ales - then choice in Rochester is plentiful. For real ale lovers, look out for beers on sale with nautical names, as these beers are all brewed locally at The Nelson Brewery in The Historic Dockyard Chatham.
If it's dining on the waterfront that takes your fancy, then a visit to Chatham Maritime is a must. Here you can have a pub lunch overlooking an attractive marina. You can try out Mexican, Chinese or a more traditional meal at one of the several places to eat at the Dickens World complex and Chatham Maritime's restaurant quarter.
There are other places to eat, drink and explore while in Medway. A gentle drive through the more rural parts of the area will take you to picturesque villages and towns, where you will discover family-run pubs specialising in local dishes and Kentish produce.
If you would like to take home some local produce direct from the supplier to savour or try out in your own recipe, then visit the Rochester Farmers' Market on the first Sunday of the month or Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre's Farmers' Market on the first Friday of the month.
