The Rochester Art Gallery and Craft Case, is situated on the ground floor of the Medway Visitor Information Centre. It features a changing programme of contemporary art and craft exhibitions by local, regional, national and international artists.
The gallery showcases challenging, contemporary visual arts by emerging and established artists, from fine art and craft to digital media and film. Works featured recently include sculptural glass by Rachel Woodman and Joseph Harrington, mixed media jewellery by Joanne Haywood and large scale sculptural installations by Craig Fisher and Lucy Brown.
The gallery, which is managed by Medway Council’s Visual Arts Development Officer, is curated and programmed both proactively and reactively. By working with other galleries, curators, artists and arts professionals and carrying out research, the gallery aims to support and promote contemporary visual arts and offers high quality exhibitions, residencies, education activities and artists’ professional development.
The gallery promotes engagement, participation and accessibility to a wide audience; developing and increasing knowledge of visual arts and contemporary craft to a range of ages.
As well as supporting local and international practitioners, and providing opportunities for the development of new work, this gallery is particularly proactive in developing buying audiences, something which benefits the area as a whole. It organises a private view of each exhibition, together with workshops and talks by featured artists, in addition to the production of interpretation material. This work not only has the benefit of broadening local and regional interest; but it is already helping to enhance Medway’s reputation as being at the cutting edge of contemporary artistic vision within Kent and South East England.
Exhibitions change every 2-3 months, and all the work, which can be taken away at the end of each exhibition, is for sale. The Craft Case offers affordable, original work starting at around £50 upwards. A small red dot is affixed to the information plate to indicate works which have already been sold. Visitors can purchase gallery merchandise such as branded canvas bags and exhibition catalogues, from the ground floor counter of the information Centre.
Artists interested in applying to have their work exhibited should express interest initially by contacting Medway Council's Arts Team for more information. The selection panel meets bi- annually.
