Adipat Virdi Presents SANGAT: We Are, Other - an immersive workshop experience

12th September 2026

An immersive workshop exploring Sikh stories of identity, heritage and belonging in Medway. Discover local stories and experiences, reflect on your own heritage and identity and explore what connects us through our differences.

SANGAT is not an exhibition you simply walk through and observe. In this immersive, performative experience, the audience becomes the main character.

Drawing on stories and lived experiences shared by Sikhs across Medway, SANGAT explores how identity, heritage, migration, family, faith and belonging have shaped the community. Through audio and video, photographs, personal and family material, objects and stories gathered during the project, audiences will encounter different perspectives on what it has meant (and continues to mean) to be Sikh in Medway.

But you will also be invited to bring your own story.

Throughout the experience, a series of playful and thought-provoking participatory activities will ask you to consider your own identity, values, family history, assumptions and experiences of belonging. Rather than simply learning about somebody else's heritage, these activities create points of connection between your experiences and those being shared.

SANGAT (ਸੰਗਤ) means community, congregation or fellowship. The experience takes that idea as its starting point: creating a temporary Sangat in which strangers can listen, participate, share and discover something about one another.

You don't need to know anything about Sikhism or Sikh heritage before coming. You just need to be willing to take part… because perhaps the thing that connects us isn't that we are all the same. It is our differences that bring us together.
