Six Poor Travellers House - Open Day

12th September 2026

Six Poor Travellers' House has been closed to the public for a number of years. There are plans in place to re-open it to the public as museum in 2027, but in the mean time, we are open for one day only.

There will be access to the house and courtyard garden. The house has a museum room and access to 3 of the original travellers' rooms to the rear. The house, which was the subject of Charles Dickens' 7 Poor Travellers, also features exhibits dedicated to the great man himself.

The House, now managed by Richard Watts Charities, was an Almshouse for Travellers until just after the Second World War, and the open day will offer visitors access to a variety of exhibits. The Almshouse, which was established following the death of Richard Watts in 1579, acts as a shrine to the great man who left a legacy which lives on in Rochester and the surrounding area.
